TRAINING ON STRESS TESTING GUIDELINES 2022 FOR BANKING INSTITUTIONS FROM 31th TO 04th AUGUST 2023 AT THE BANK OF TANZANIA-MBEYA  

A. BACKGROUND

Among the major responsibilities of the Bank of Tanzania is to supervise banks and financial institutions to ensure stability, safety and soundness of the financial system that contributes to fostering the growth of the national economy.  Stress testing is an important tool used by banks and financial institutions as part of their internal risk management and capital planning.  Stress testing is a key component of the supervisory assessment process that assists in identifying potential risks and assessing the resilience of banks and financial Institutions in the ability to absorb losses during stressful conditions.

The Bank of Tanzania issued Stress Testing Guideline 2022, which requires all banks and financial institutions to conduct quarterly stress testing exercise with effect from 1st July 2022.  It aimed at providing guidance to the banks and financial institutions on carrying out stress testing, usage of stress testing results, and preparation of mitigation plans.

In this regard, the Bank of Tanzania Academy, in collaboration with the Directorate of Financial Sector Supervision, has organized training on Stress Testing Guideline for banks and financial institutions.

B. COURSE OBJECTIVE

The objective of this course is to share with banking institutions methods and the Stress

Test Model developed by the Bank for uniformity, comparability and compliance.

Moreover, this course is aimed at enhancing staff of banks and financial institutions knowledge and skills on stress testing. Also, to engage senior management of banking institutions and guide them to appreciate any supervisory action, which might be prescribed by the Bank following the results of the stress testing.

C. TARGET GROUP

Senior and Middle level officers in the banking institutions who are involved in credit, market liquidity risks or overall risk management of their institutions.

D. COURSE CONTENTS

Key topics to be presented and discussed will include:

  • Overview of Risk Management Guidelines, 2010,
  • Introduction to stress testing
  • Roles of Banking Institutions in stress testing
  • Principles of sound stress testing practices and supervision
  • Bank of Tanzania approach to stress testing
  • Risks focus of Bank of Tanzania stress testing
  • Bank of Tanzania stress testing model/approach
  • Stress Test case studies
  • Uses and effective communication of stress testing results

From 31th to 08th August 2023. First day registration will start at 08.30 am.
